How sustainable is upholstery? What are the modern-day makers doing to consider the global impact of their work? What services does the future need us to provide? Why is sustainability so important?
SUSTAINABILITY. A buzzword and hot topic of discussion throughout the day's talks, Q&A's and Demonstrations.
We are delighted to welcome Second Sitters, Jude Dennis & Hannah Stanton, along with professional upholsterers Alex Law, Vanessa Butt & Rachel South, who will be bringing their knowledge of sustainable upholstery and demonstrating their approach to craft.

Second Sitters is a creative partnership of practising upholsterers exploring the possibilities of what the craft means in the modern age. They design and deliver unique upholstery events, happenings, exhibitions and talks to open up a conversation around this hidden craft.

Inventor of the 'Thought-fill' cushion, Vanessa has made a New Years Resolution for 2022 - to go FOAM FREE for a year.
Vanessa, an original member of Bristol Upholstery Collective now lives in London, having worked as AMUSF Tutor at London Met, whilst running her own upholstery business with sustainability being at its heart.
Vanessa will be demonstrating her 'Thought-fill cushion' and encouraging upholsterers to follow her lead in researching and prototyping their own techniques and alternatives to foam.

After studying Textiles (Design and Application) at London Guildhall University, Rachael has had an extensive career as a freelance textile product designer and bespoke Passemanterie Designer.
She has now taken on her father’s (Terry South) established upholstery business.
Drawing on her experience travelling and working with weavers in India, Central America and Europe, Rachael has added exciting flair to her approach to furniture and upholstery.
Her aim is to apply traditional technical excellence with a contemporary execution.
Rachael is also passionate about supporting re-cycling and sustainable living, hoping each reconditioned piece of furniture will last for another generation of use.
Racheal is an AMUSF Tutor at London Met and has made regular appearances on BBC One show The Repair Shop.

"Alex Law is a man of vision and passion – and his medium is upholstery. His pupils learn how to shimmy through boundaries, brandishing a webbing stretcher and clenching tin tacks between their teeth." - Faversham Life 2017
Author of many books to be found on the shelves of upholsterers worldwide, and as seen on TV show 'Saved & Remade', Alex has a keen interest in all matters of sustainability.
His practices now start at the allotment, and grow from there.
