How sustainable is upholstery? What are the modern-day makers doing to consider the global impact of their work? What services does the future need us to provide? Why is sustainability so important?

SUSTAINABILITY. A buzzword and hot topic of discussion throughout the day's talks, Q&A's and Demonstrations.

We are delighted to welcome Second Sitters, Jude Dennis & Hannah Stanton, along with professional upholsterers Alex Law, Vanessa Butt & Rachel South, who will be bringing their knowledge of sustainable upholstery and demonstrating their approach to craft.

After studying Textiles (Design and Application) at London Guildhall University, Rachael has had an extensive career as a freelance textile product designer and bespoke Passemanterie Designer.

She has now taken on her father’s (Terry South) established upholstery business.

Drawing on her experience travelling and working with weavers in India, Central America and Europe, Rachael has added exciting flair to her approach to furniture and upholstery.

Her aim is to apply traditional technical excellence with a contemporary execution.

Rachael is also passionate about supporting re-cycling and sustainable living, hoping each reconditioned piece of furniture will last for another generation of use.

"Alex Law is a man of vision and passion – and his medium is upholstery.  His pupils learn how to shimmy through boundaries, brandishing a webbing stretcher and clenching tin tacks between their teeth." - Faversham Life 2017

Author of many books to be found on the shelves of upholsterers worldwide, and as seen on TV show 'Saved & Remade', Alex has a keen interest in all matters of sustainability.

His practices now start at the allotment, and grow from there.
