Caning & Rush Seat Weaving Masterclasses

The wonderful Rachael South joins us at Bristol Upholstery Collective to hold an exclusive Caning Masterclass.

Rachael has an unmatched passion for traditionally caning, restoring and upholstering chairs, with a deep knowledge of chair caning, rush, Danish paper cord and other seat weaving techniques. Her skills have been passed down from her grandfather and father, as well as worked with weavers in India, Central America and Europe.

Beginners

Following an incredible introduction to Rachel South and her family craft heritage, you will be guided through each stage of the caning or rush weaving process, learning how to weave glorious patterns.  You will complete a caning sample frame or small rush stool frame to take home with you at the end of the day.

Intermediate

As an intermediate student, you will build on the caning or rush weaving skills you already have from our beginner's frame exercise. Rachael will guide you through applying your caning and/or rush weaving knowledge to a piece of furniture you have sourced. Ideally, this would be a small bedroom chair.

*Please note: You must have produced a beginner's sample frame with us before moving on to an intermediate project - trust us! Start at the beginning.
