Sewing Weekend Course

Box Seat & Scatter cushion
2-day weekend course

Here at Bristol Upholstery Collective, we love to inspire confidence and enjoyment of all skills related to upholstery, and of course, sewing is an essential skill required in the completion of most upholstered projects.

Some of our favourite Armchairs have loose cushion seats, otherwise known as ‘Box Cushions’. These are often piped and have a zip to make the cover removable, commonly found on Ercol, mid-century, Parker Knoll Winged armchairs or sofas.

To sew a box cushion, a good level of sewing knowledge is helpful. If you are a complete beginner we will get you as far as we comfortably can in a weekend.

We aim to build confidence and achieve quality results. A great deal of precision and patience is required when learning, so basic knowledge and a fearless approach are encouraged.

If you have upholstered an armchair at Bristol Upholstery Collective, you will probably need to enrol on this workshop to complete the whole chair.

The focus of this weekend is to build on your existing skills and tackle slightly more challenging sewing projects, taking on tasks and techniques using an industrial sewing machine. (Don't worry, they are not as scary as they sound).

9:30am - Arrive 9:20 for a 9:30am start, with a cup of tea and introduction to the workshop.

9:50am - Introduction to Industrial Sewing machines and Overlocker, and 5 exercises to feel familiar with the way they work.

12 - PICNIC LUNCH (Please bring a packed lunch or visit the local cafe/shop)

12:30pm  - Box cushion preparation - Measuring, cutting and overclocking your fabric.

2pm - Sewing Piping around corners

3pm - Making a zip panel

4pm - Clipping all the pieces together

4:30pm - END OF DAY 1

9:30am - Sewing your box cushion pieces together.

11:30am - fitting your cushion inner.

12 - PICNIC LUNCH

12:30pm - Practice your skills, make a Scatter Cushion!

4:30pm - END OF DAY 2

What to expect...

Please go at your own pace and be aware beginners may not finish the scatter cushion during the allocated time.

We want you to prioritise finishing your box cushion to complete your chair.
