    Print & Upholstery: 3-Day Masterclass

Design, print, and upholster your own bespoke chair

Join textile designer and screen printer Jessie De Salis and upholsterer Leigh-Anne (Bristol Upholstery Collective) for a unique three-part masterclass where you’ll create a completely bespoke piece of furniture—from fabric design to final upholstery.

This is a rare opportunity to learn two crafts side-by-side and leave with a beautifully reimagined chair that is entirely your own.

    ✺ What you’ll do

    Day 1 — Print (Somerset)
Set in Jessie’s beautiful barn studio at Yarlington House, you’ll spend the day immersed in screen printing.

    • Design your own fabric or work with Jessie’s pre-prepared designs
    • Mix your own colours and experiment with composition
    • Print up to 3 metres of fabric, tailored to your project
    • Bring your chair for consultation (see guidance below)
    • Learn how to plan fabric placement to suit shape and scale
    • Develop colour-ways and refine your design
    • Measure up and prepare your fabric for upholstery
    • Choose trims, finishes, and details (including the option to print your own piping and buttons)
    • Enjoy a relaxed, creative atmosphere in a stunning English country garden setting (with optional pool dips if the weather allows)

This day is all about play, exploration, and creating something truly personal and bespoke.

    Day 2 — Upholstery (Bristol)
At the Bristol Upholstery Collective studio, we shift focus to your chair.

    • Bring your own chair (see guidance below)
    • Be guided step-by-step through the upholstery process
    • Make any preparations adding extra layer of oomf to the top layer stuffing.
    • Use a fire inter-liner to protect and strengthen in preparation for your printed fabric.
    • Measure , cut and apply your bespoke fabric to the seat and inside back of your chair
    • Learn professional techniques for recovering furniture

This is where your fabric and furniture come together into a cohesive vision.

    Day 3 — Upholstery (Bristol)
Return to the studio to transform your chair.

    • Attach the outside back and bottoming cloth
    • Learn invisible hand-stitching techniques
    • Adding any bespoke finishes
    • Complete your bespoke design piece with expert support
    • We invite Jessie to join us for a mini celebration and photo shoot with your marvellous creations!

You’ll leave with a finished chair that reflects your creativity from start to finish.

    ✺ What to bring

    • A small chair suitable for recovering (e.g. cocktail chair, nursing chair, slipper chair, or a set of dining chairs)
    • Your ideas, references, or inspiration (optional but encouraged)

Chairs should be structurally sound and in need of recovering rather than major restoration.

    ✺ What’s included

    • All fabric and printing materials (plus practice cloth)
    • Expert tuition across both disciplines
    • Lunch on Day 1 in Somerset
    • A truly unique, collaborative learning experience

    ✺ Location

    • Day 1: Jessie De Salis’ Barn Studio, Yarlington House, Somerset BA9 8DY
    • Day 2 & 3: Bristol Upholstery Collective Studio, Bristol BS59TQ

(Full travel details provided after booking)

    ✺ Who it’s for

    This masterclass is perfect for:

    • Beginners and creatives curious about textiles and upholstery
    • Makers wanting to expand their skillset
    • Anyone looking to create a one-of-a-kind, stunning furniture piece

No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and experiment.

    ✺ Why this is special

It’s rare to design fabric specifically for a piece of furniture and then bring it to life yourself. This course bridges that gap—giving you the tools, skills, and confidence to create something completely bespoke.

  • All courses require time and incur costs prior to its duration, in creating a wonderfully enjoyable learning experience for the participant, as a beginner/improver student, to gain maximum value for money and achieve advanced skill upholstery.

Due to the nature of preparation involved, there can be no refund offered to the student if they can not attend the specific course once booked. Only if the tutor cancels the course for any unseen circumstances will a full refund be given within 30 days of the course cancellation.

If you miss any classes, we cannot offer 'catch up' sessions due to the number of students enrolled and the complications of our teachers' schedules. If you need more time to complete a project, you will need to re-book another course or get in touch with us about suitable evening or weekend courses that may be available and that would suit your needs.

Upholstery materials are included in the course fee.

Any extra materials used will be noted and charged for at student discount rate at the end of the term. This can be paid by card for a £1 charge or invoiced to your email address for transfer payment. Late payments may incur interest fees.

Please note that the tutor can accept no responsibility for injuries taking place over the course duration. There is a small risk of non life- threatening injury, plasters are provided but will have to be administered by the student him/herself to adhere to health & safety regulations. Small cuts and pinpricks to the skin are occasionally expected.

A health & safety talk will be given at the start of the course advising action and care to be taken at all times.

Please ensure proper use of all tools during the workshop to ensure student safety and quality continuation of the tools owned by Bristol Upholstery Collective and fellow students.

Please be considerate towards other students within the space and take care to work at a safe distance.

Upholstery can be a physically demanding and strenuous activity. Students are responsible for communicating their needs and helping themselves to remain comfortable and free from risk of injury at all costs.

A positive attitude is of upmost importance to ensure an enjoyable experience for all. Please be kind to yourself during challenging moments and remember you are learning an age-old process and are achieving advanced traditional upholstery skills to be practiced and proud of.

Many Thanks for your co- operation and understanding.
